The Life of a Startup DSO: Reflections on a Year of Growth and Transformation

3 min read

At the end of 2023, I made the difficult decision to depart from Guardian Dentistry Partners, where I had the privilege of serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for three fulfilling and rewarding years. My time there had been marked by incredible growth and dedication to a shared vision. Although it was challenging to step away from a role and team I deeply valued, the opportunity to partner with a capital investor and embark on the adventure of starting a brand-new company from the ground up was too compelling to resist. I was taking the first step into uncharted territory, navigating a path I had not traveled before. Although I had the support of many, it was still a brand-new experience filled with challenges and opportunities.

As I reflect on this journey nearly a year later, I’m reminded of several thought-provoking questions that shaped our early discussions: What will we name the company? What will the logo convey? Who will make up our starting leadership team? In which state will we open our first practice? What will be our thesis, strategy, and playbook, including our Objectives and Key Results (OKRs)? What strategic partners and vendors will align with our vision? Most importantly, what do we want to be known for in this competitive landscape? These questions helped us lay the groundwork for a company we aim to position as the standard-bearer in dental implant care.

Now, as we’ve concluded 2024, I look back at how the year has unfolded. It has been a whirlwind—125 nights spent at Bonvoy Hotels, 74 flights taken, and countless hours dedicated to attending dental conferences. Networking with industry professionals has provided invaluable insights and broadened our perspectives. Between management meetings and time spent in boardrooms, airports, hotel lobbies, and even some doctor living rooms and kitchens, I have connected with many inspiring doctors with remarkable clinical backgrounds and thriving practices. These interactions and experiences have been instrumental in shaping Reveal’s identity as a value-driven, people-first organization.

Along this path, we faced many decisions and dilemmas, particularly in marrying stakeholder and objectives with our commitment to our people-first approach. This balancing act prompted me to draw on the lessons I’ve learned over the years: trust the guidance I’ve given others and embrace the core values that define our mission. One of the most pressing leadership challenges has been finding ways to keep our team engaged, even before we had physical practices to show for our efforts. Building a cohesive team and fostering a culture of collaboration was paramount in our early days, and it required us to be creative and resourceful. What kept us going is our north star, our why and our purpose. We are reminded that we are committed to building this company the right way, with the right foundation. We had to maintain discipline, understanding that fast and easy isn’t always right, and we needed to practice patience and remember how minor nuances now can have more considerable impacts later.

Ultimately, the life of a start-up can be unpredictable; it’s not a straight line. Plans change, and it’s important to learn how to pivot as circumstances evolve. Adapting to new challenges while staying aligned with our vision has been a crucial aspect of our journey, enabling us to navigate uncertainty with resilience and a proactive mindset. However, this journey has proven worthwhile. We have built something unique and special—a company that is both value-centric and differentiated in a crowded market. The lessons learned, the connections made, and the experiences shared have all contributed to crafting a vision that I am immensely proud of.
